In response to slowing growth, producers and retailers of organic products must adapt to consumer expectations, which have shifted in light of the economy and other factors, U.K.-based Organic Monitor argues. Following higher growth rates, the global organic food market has slowed to single-digits. The U.K., which registered 2% growth in 2008, has been affected most, as consumers wield less spending power. However, as growth has slowed, consumer expectations have risen. As a result, Organic Monitor claims “Organic Plus” strategies, such as ethical sourcing, traceability, offsetting carbon emissions, sustainability and corporate social responsibility, are necessary to drive the market forward.
